Boosting Energy Efficiency in QLD Social Housing: A $116M Upgrade to Save on Power Bills

In a game-changing $116 million investment from both the Federal and Queensland governments, tens of thousands of Queenslanders living in social housing will soon benefit from energy performance upgrades. These improvements aim to significantly lower energy bills while also easing cost-of-living pressures, making homes more comfortable all year round.

The initiative will provide a range of upgrades, including the installation of solar PV panels, energy-efficient hot water systems, thermal shell improvements, ceiling fans, and air cooling solutions. The upgrades will be rolled out to approximately 28,000 public housing and 4,000 community housing properties. This investment is part of Queensland’s broader commitment to transitioning to clean energy while supporting its most vulnerable citizens.

Warmer Winters, Cooler Summers – and Lower Bills!

With temperatures soaring in summer and dropping in winter, these energy efficiency upgrades will not only reduce the amount of energy needed to heat and cool homes, but they’ll also make a significant dent in household energy bills.

As Queensland Premier Steven Miles points out, this initiative is about ensuring every Queenslander has access to a safe, comfortable, and affordable home. “This investment will help further reduce power bills for vulnerable households by making their homes more energy efficient, which is especially important with rising cost-of-living pressures,” said Mr Miles.

A Win for the Environment and Vulnerable Communities

In addition to easing cost burdens, the upgrades also align with Queensland’s clean energy transformation goals. Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, highlighted that partnering with Queensland on these upgrades will improve the energy performance of homes and provide direct benefits to those most affected by high energy costs.

Social housing tenants are often the least able to afford energy upgrades but feel the brunt of rising energy costs. “The Federal Government wants to ensure that everyone, no matter their financial situation, can benefit from modern, energy-efficient technologies,” said Federal Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Josh Wilson.

What This Means for Queenslanders

The energy upgrades are a win-win, helping to reduce environmental impact while improving the quality of life for thousands of Queenslanders. By reducing energy consumption, the initiative also contributes to Queensland’s efforts to lead the clean energy revolution, according to Queensland Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, Mick De Brenni.

“We’re doing what matters for Queensland – building more homes and helping Queenslanders save on their power bills,” added Queensland Minister for Housing, Meaghan Scanlon.

With the planned upgrades, social housing tenants can look forward to warmer winters, cooler summers, and much-needed relief from rising energy costs.
