Driving Down Solar Costs:

How Robotics and Software Innovations Are Shaping the Future

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced a significant boost to the solar industry with over $3.2 million in funding for two groundbreaking projects aimed at reducing solar costs and enhancing efficiency. This move underscores ARENA’s commitment to making solar power ultra-low-cost and accelerating Australia’s transition to renewable energy.

Innovative Projects Set to Transform Solar Technology

  1.  PV Lighthouse’s SunSolve Software Enhancement – PV Lighthouse Pty Ltd is set to receive $1.97 million to enhance its SunSolve yield modelling software. This advanced software will increase the accuracy of power output forecasts and reduce uncertainty in the planning and development stages of solar projects. By providing developers with more precise yield forecasts, SunSolve helps secure project financing and supports the move towards ultra-low-cost solar. Keith McIntosh, Founder and CEO of PV Lighthouse, highlights the significance: “Before SunSolve, developers lacked a modelling solution that accurately represented their structures and modules. Now, they can rapidly calculate loss factors, giving them greater confidence in their forecasts—an essential advantage when negotiating project financing.”
  2. Built Robotics’ Autonomous Piling Robots – Built Robotics Australia Pty Ltd will receive $1.3 million to develop autonomous piling robots for constructing utility-scale solar farms. This Australian-first project aims to automate the pile driving process, which is currently labor-intensive and time-consuming. The robots are expected to reduce piling time and labor costs by up to 82% and 88% respectively, enhancing efficiency and safety on construction sites. Paul Kelly, General Manager and VP of Business Development at Built Robotics, comments: “Australia is a technology hub for renewable energy. We are honored to work with ARENA to invent better ways of building solar farms. Our robots aim to lower energy costs, accelerate construction, and provide safer working conditions.”

A Vision for the Future

ARENA’s goal is to reduce the installed cost of solar projects to just 30 cents per watt and achieve a levelized cost of electricity below $20 per megawatt hour by 2030. This ambitious target could pave the way for a total installed solar capacity of 1 terawatt by 2050.

Both projects are part of ARENA’s $100 million Solar ScaleUp Challenge, designed to stimulate innovation and collaboration in the solar sector. This initiative aims to realize ARENA’s vision of ultra-low-cost solar and accelerate the deployment of large-scale solar projects.
