As Australian families and business owners seek to reduce energy costs and contribute to a sustainable future, a new report from the Clean Energy Council offers compelling reasons to consider rooftop solar, home batteries, and electrification. Titled “Powering Homes, Empowering People: A National Consumer Energy Resources Roadmap,” the report highlights significant benefits, including substantial savings on energy bills, job creation, and progress towards renewable energy targets.
Significant Savings for All Australians
The report reveals that a national strategy to support Consumer Energy Resources (CER) can save every Australian household and business up to $71 annually on energy bills. This means even those who haven’t yet switched to solar can still benefit from the broader adoption of these technologies.
Job Creation and Economic Boost
The widespread adoption of CER is expected to create over 18,000 new jobs in manufacturing, sales, design, and installation of solar and battery systems. This growth not only benefits the environment but also boosts the Australian economy by providing more opportunities for skilled labor.
Meeting Climate Targets
Australia’s electrification journey is crucial for lowering power bills and achieving a timely energy transition. The report outlines that CER storage capacity is projected to increase to 34 GW, while orchestrated capacity integrated into the grid will reach 27 GW by 2050, keeping Australia on track to meet its renewable energy and climate targets.
Key Policy Recommendations
To maximize the benefits of electrification, the Clean Energy Council recommends several policies and programs, including:
- Empowering Communities Fund: $100 million for education and training programs about electrification and energy efficiency.
- National Home Battery Saver Scheme: Up to $6500 per household for battery storage systems.
- Opportunities for Renters and Social Housing Residents: Ensuring all Australians can participate in CER.
- Maximizing Network Capacity: Allowing customers to unlock and maximize network capacity through their choices.

The Clean Energy Council’s report emphasizes the importance of empowering homeowners, renters, social housing residents, and business owners to understand and adopt CER. By building a cleaner, cheaper, and fairer Australian energy system, we can create a brighter future for everyone.
