Australia’s rooftop solar adoption continues to surge, with the Clean Energy Council’s latest Rooftop Solar and Storage Report revealing that solar now provides 11.3% of the country’s total energy generation. During the first half of 2024, 1.3GW of new rooftop solar systems were installed, highlighting a nationwide shift toward renewable energy.
New South Wales has joined Queensland in surpassing one million rooftop PV installations, proving that solar is more than just a trend—it’s becoming a necessity for homes and small businesses looking to cut energy costs.
Leading the Way in Solar
“Australian consumers are continuing to lead the world in adopting rooftop solar,” said Clean Energy Council Co-Chief Policy and Impact Officer, Con Hristodoulidis. With typical payback periods of just three to four years, installing solar is an easy way to reduce energy bills and lessen the impact of rising energy costs.
Today, 3.7 million homes and small businesses have rooftop solar panels, helping them save on daytime energy use. The next step? Home battery storage to make the most of solar energy when the sun isn’t shining.
Maximising Solar Savings with Batteries
Although nearly 30,000 home batteries were sold in the first half of 2024, there’s still a long way to go to meet Australia’s renewable energy targets. The Clean Energy Council’s “It’s Time to Back Batteries” campaign calls for national incentives to boost battery uptake. This could save households between $900 and $1500 per year, and even lower energy costs for homes without solar.
With Australia’s rooftop solar capacity set to exceed 25GW by the end of 2024, the future of clean energy is brighter than ever.
